Odds That Someone Holds a Better Hand Than You Do Pre-Flop

Because of the community card nature of the game and the fact that high cards beat low cards, it is critical that your hole cards be better than your opponent’s has A♣ Q♦, then you might as well be playing with only your J ♠ because pairing your Queen doesn’t help you at all (not counting straight draws).Hold'em odds

Holding a common card with an opponent whose second card is higher than yours makes you about a 4-1 underdog before the flop. In the example above, you both miss, he wins with his Ace high.  If you both pair your Queens, he wins with his Ace kicker.  For easier reading, odds that are less than 1-to-1 are expressed as a percentage (%) from this point on.

The Top 40 Hold’em Hands, Based on Earning Power

There’s been a lot of speculation about which hand is better than another and exactly how they should be ranked.  To make this determination, you have to consider how high or low the pocket cards are, if they’re suited or not, can they make a straight limit, can they make the nuts, do they fare better against a large field or do they do better against one opponent, and can they win without much improvement.

When all of these factors are combined, they determine the ultimate consideration; how profitable is the hand for you?  How much money does the hand make?
Recent computer analysis suggests that of all 169 possible poker hold’em hands, the top 40 hands, in descending order, goes like this:
